Pakistan’s Emerging Investment Landscape: EVs, Fintech, and AI: the New Waves of Foreign Investment

Despite navigating ongoing macroeconomic headwinds, Pakistan has witnessed a substantial wave of new company registrations and foreign corporate investments. Driven heavily by Special Economic Zones (SEZs), CPEC Phase II, and regulatory easing by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), more than 79 new foreign firms have officially established operations in the country over the last three years alone.
Major investment inflows, market entries, and upcoming projects span several key sectors:

Electric Vehicles (EV) & Clean Energy

The automotive and energy sectors are shifting rapidly toward sustainability, with major global auto players making official entry plays:
• BYD & Chery Automobile: Chinese EV giants BYD and Chery have entered the local market, making formal moves to establish local assembly plants and infrastructure for electric vehicles.
• NWTN Motors: The UAE-based mobility company is exploring significant footprints in Pakistan’s emerging EV segment.

Renewable infrastructure, driven by high power costs and climate policies, is leading to massive private investments in solar component manufacturing and wind power initiatives, making renewables a booming investment theme.

Digital Banking, Fintech & Digital Infrastructure

Pakistan’s immense unbanked population has made it a focal point for massive telecom re-routing and digital-first banking networks:
• Mashreq Bank: The UAE banking titan has officially launched Pakistan’s first fully digital bank and is scaling up operations aggressively.
• Raqami Digital Bank: Backed by Kuwaiti investors, Raqami is deploying a planned $100 million investment to expand digital financial infrastructure.
• Engro Jazz Consortium: Committing over $550 million specifically targeted toward scaling up digital infrastructure and high-speed connectivity across the country.
• VEON Group: The global telecom giant has significantly bumped up its capital injection into Mobilink Bank to accelerate microfinance digitization.

Global Corporate Acquisitions & Energy Retail

Multinational restructuring has led to several massive equity buyouts and entries from heavy-hitting conglomerates:

Saudi Aramco established a prominent physical presence in Pakistan’s retail petroleum industry by acquiring a sizable 40% ownership investment in Gas & Oil Pakistan Limited (GO).

Wafi Energy (Saudi Arabia) officially acquired Shell Pakistan’s operations as part of Shell’s global reorganization strategy.

Gunvor Group & Total Parco The Swiss energy trader Gunvor, alongside Total Parco, acquired equal stakes in TotalEnergies Pakistan.

PTCL & e& (UAE) PTCL’s large acquisition of Telenor Pakistan was completed by the UAE telecom group e& (formerly Etisalat Group), which fully integrated the local telecom infrastructure. e& (formerly Etisalat Group) is a major player in Pakistan’s telecommunications sector, primarily through its 26% stake and management control in Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL). e&’s expanded operations in the country include PTCL’s full acquisition of Telenor Pakistan

Tech Startups & VC Funding

Pakistan’s startup ecosystem is recovering with high-quality, capital-efficient ventures securing sizable funding rounds in fintech, logistics, and AI:

Haball: Secured a major $52M Pre-Series A funding round (led by Zayn VC and backed by Meezan Bank), handling over $3B in B2B supply chain payments.
Qist Bazaar & PostEx: Leading the e-commerce infrastructure wave. Qist Bazaar dominates the Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) space, while PostEx raised over $8.6 million to provide instant upfront cash liquidity for Cash-On-Delivery merchants.
Metric & Metal: Frontrunners in the AI sector. Metric raised funding for its flagship “Chief Financial AI” to help SMEs automate finance data, while Metal (backed by a16z and Y Combinator) uses AI to optimize venture capital workflows.
Trukkr: The freight-tech platform raised close to $10M, backed by Yango Ventures, to streamline Pakistan’s logistics and embedded financial services.

Mining, Logistics & Real Estate

Barrick Gold & US Firms: Massive global attention is shifting toward the Balochistan and northern mineral belts, with renewed capital injections from Barrick Gold, Strategic Metals US, and Nova Minerals US.
DP World & Nippon Express: The National Logistics Corporation (NLC) and UAE-based DP World formed a crucial joint venture, and international logistics company Nippon Express formally purchased a share in TCS to capitalize on regional supply chain shifts.
One Homes: Partnered with famous international designers (like Miami’s Kobi Karp and London’s Jolie) for a massive premier real estate development project in Lahore West.

What’s driving this?

The surge is heavily tied to CPEC Phase II, which has triggered business-to-business (B2B) agreements worth over $1.5 billion and MOUs exceeding $7 billion. Additionally, government incentives in Export Processing Zones (such as tax exemptions on imported machinery) and the rise of Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs) listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) are providing brand-new avenues for public and private capital to enter the country.
